The eldest of three brothers, Jon Bon Jovi was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He grew up idolizing rock icons such as Bruce Springsteen and the Asbury Jukes and dreamed of one day being a rock star himself. Jon began singing at local clubs and hanging out at studios in his teens. By 1980, he was sweeping floors at his cousin Tony Bongiovi’s recording studio, Power Station. After a band named Atlantic City Expressway recorded a song called Runaway, the single received regular airplay on a local radio station. That led to a call from manager Derek Shulman who signed Jon Bon Jovi to PolyGram Records.
The band’s eponymous debut album, Bon Jovi, was a Top 40 hit with a version of Runaway and the follow-up 7800deg Fahrenheit went gold as well. Their next release, Slippery When Wet, was a huge success in the United States and went multi-platinum worldwide. It features some of the band’s biggest hits such as Livin’ on a Prayer and Wanted Dead or Alive.
In the 1990s, Bon Jovi branched out into acting and appeared in popular TV shows like Sex and the City and Ally McBeal. He also started writing songs for movies, including the soundtrack to Romeo Is Bleeding, starring Gary Oldman and Katherine Heigl. He also wrote a number of songs for other movie soundtracks and even starred in a couple of them himself.
After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Bon Jovi was among many musicians who filmed public service announcements for the Red Cross and performed at two live telethons to raise funds. He has also worked with Habitat for Humanity, building homes alongside the families who will be living in them.
‘Lay Your Hands On Me’ is probably the most well-known Bon Jovi song. It’s a cheeky, sexy track that has been covered by countless artists, most recently Dolly Parton on her 2014 album ‘Blue Smoke’. The song’s lyrics are pretty simple, urging listeners to let go of their anger and problems and put their trust in God. It’s a big hit that always gets a massive crowd response at every concert.
Bon Jovi have released twelve albums to date, and their latest one is called New Jersey. It is the first since Richie Sambora left the band in 2013. It features some of their biggest hits, including ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ and ‘Always’. Their newest tour is due to begin in January 2021. They have sold millions of tickets already and are expected to be as successful as ever. Jon and the band will be playing a number of shows across North America, Europe and Asia.
