The band wanted to call themselves Johnny Electric, but Pamela suggested that they follow the norm of other bands at the time who used two-word names, like Van Halen, Dokken, and others. The name Bon Jovi was a good fit because it highlighted the band’s frontman and removed any ethnic ties from the name.
After achieving initial success, the band released their self-titled debut album in 1984. They continued to release hits through the mid-’80s, including Slippery When Wet and Livin’ on a Prayer. The latter pushed the band into the mainstream, with its themes of love, romance, and forgiveness. The album became the band’s best-selling work to date.
In the ’90s, Bon Jovi continued to be a popular live act. In 2013 Sambora left the band citing “personal issues.” Phil X replaced him on the remainder of the tour, but Sambora rejoined the band in 2018 and has been active with the group since.

The band is currently working on a new album, titled Forever, which will be their first without Sambora’s creative input.
